And not a bad storyline. I like how they left it open for the next film. Reviewed in the United States on August 14, 2019 Verified Purchase
I'm completely unfamiliar with the Detective Dee character but it was obvious that this is a franchise of sorts. That's fine. But there's a lot of symbolism in this that simply didn't make any sense to me. And the ending was just incomprehensible. So the villains use "sorcery", which the audience is meant to understand as "illusions" rather than actual magic. That's fine and dandy, but then what exactly was the gorilla fighting at the end? It looked like a giant Hindu demon covered in eyes, but that's just the *illusion* that the characters saw - what was actually there? Is the giant silver gorilla real? Considering the great expectation set by the first two Detective Dee films, this one was a complete letdown. The plot lacks any substance or mystery, the CGI is excessive (and fails to convey anything), and Empress Dowager is degraded from a cunning, head-strong politician to a puppet manipulated by a set of second-rate magicians.

I noticed just a hint of banding in some of the production
mastheads before the film actually started, but nothing in the presentation itself. Detective Dee: The Four Heavenly Kings Blu-ray, Audio Quality
Detective Dee: The Four Heavenly Kings features a sometimes insanely gonzo DTS:X mix in the original Mandarin. This is one of the more
enjoyable DTS:X mixes I've personally gotten to review, some of it courtesy of some of the weaponry (literally) on hand, as with some of the spinning
discs one of the Mystic Clan utilizes. When he sends them flying, the overhead panning sounds are fantastic, and a number of fight scenes offer
incredible placement of discrete effects, so that the listener is virtually enveloped in sound. Other big effects moments, like the "resurrection" of a
Golden Dragon in the imperial court also offer nice engagement of all the surround channels, as well as some thundering LFE. Dialogue is presented
clearly and cleanly, fidelity is excellent and dynamic range extremely wide on this very enjoyable track.

I enjoyed the first 2 films and planned to buy the third but was put off by a review that stressed the excessive special effects. This has been a curse for Asian movies as you would think CGI would be far more advanced for them. It's the opposite as too sharp, too obvious, too exaggerated, too much especially in creating creatures. The desire to every watch these movies again faint. Finally wanting to watch something new I purchased it fearing the worst. For those who haven't yet watched here's the scoop. Surprisingly the first 2/3 s of the movie hold together well with the actors you remember. The effects start to pile up but within reason. It's the final 1/3 give or take with the big battle that it all becomes a joke. These movies are exaggerated in fight scenes anyway, but the ridiculous poorly designed monsters overwhelm the real actor scenes and it's a joke. What is a fully expected unrealistic movie to begin with, becomes a cartoonist poor vision.

85:1. The
IMDb lists this as having screened theatrically in both 2. 35:1 and 1:90 (in its IMAX 3D version). As with the other Detective Dee films Well Go
USA has released, fans may be frustrated by the fact that only a "flat" 2D rendering of the film is included, something that, much as I mentioned in my
closing comments of our
Young Detective Dee: Rise of the
Sea Dragon Blu-ray review, may be especially disappointing since it's so obvious that many of the big special effects sequences in the film were
specifically designed with 3D in mind. That said, this Red Epic Dragon shot film looks spectacular on (2D) Blu-ray, with beautifully sharp detail
throughout and an incredibly vivid and well saturated palette. Even typically soft elements like CGI often have superb detail levels here, as in the kind
of Yeti meets King Kong character, where the rendering of the fur is virtually palpable. Some of what look like practical makeup effects also have
superb levels of fine detail, sometimes even in midrange shots.

I speak no Chinese, but am familiar with the Judge Dee character as portrayed in English language detective stories by Robert van Gulick. My wife is a native speaker of Mandarin, Canotnese, and Shanghainese, and is familiar with Dee in Chinese texts. Neither of us - me reading subtitles and my wife listening to the Chinese sound track - could figure out what was supposed to be going on, and neither of us can say that there was a plot of some sort. This is definitely the worst of the Detective Dee features so far. The most annoying aspect is perhaps the ludicrous CGI, but the plot is also thew weakest so far, leaning far too heavily on "magic" (as increasingly Chinese movies and dramas do) One wonders what audience this is intended for. Overall judgment: Just plain silly.
